That oversimplification leaves out the times where we spent all day in the van because it was raining, or when we had to evacuate our campsite at Crater Lake because a car went up in flames a couple of sites over. Over the course of that road trip, we were living our best lives – hiking 7-10 miles a day, spending all day outside, and eating meals cooked over a camp stove. We fell in love with the state of Oregon when, in mid-2020, we decided to try out living in our minivan – Homer the Honda Odyssey – and spent six weeks on an incredible Oregon road trip that took us all over the state, from the Oregon Coast, to Bend and Crater Lake National Park, and, of course, to Portland, one of our favorite cities in the country. Looking for a detailed guide to the best hikes in Oregon? You’re in the right place! In this guide to hiking in Oregon, we’re going to cover our favorite Oregon hikes – all of which we have personally done and loved – along with all the logistics you’ll need to know like parking permits, dog friendly hiking trails in Oregon, and more. The Best Columbia River Gorge Hikes Expand. The Best Hikes in Oregon (Our Favorites).Planning Your Portland Itinerary Expand.Already new plants are thriving and old trees are rotting, while insects, animals and fungi are all playing their parts in the cycle of life. Our hearts might still ache in the wake of the fire, but the forest has long since moved on. Nature doesn't mourn what was lost – it's our memories of that loss that linger. At the bottom of the trail, soft and squishy with mud, moss still clings to rocky hills and ferns still spring forth from the depths of the earth. Watching it explode into flames last year was devastating, and since then many of us have been itching to get back, to see what became of our holy land.Īngel's Rest is a disheartening reminder of the destructive power of fire, but also a reminder of the resilience of nature.Īs you head back down the trail through the forest of snags, past newly revealed views of the gorge, you quickly return to a familiar green landscape. Where you expect to see a comforting blanket of green, you'll find nothing but a patchwork of black and brown – the gray of naked deciduous trees offering the lone sense of natural order.įor many of us in the Pacific Northwest, the Columbia River Gorge is indeed a temple, a place we go to worship and connect with something bigger than us. Standing in communion with the nature that surrounds, swallows, holds you in place, you can truly feel the power of the land.īut glancing down to the forest below, the heart can't help but sink just a little at the site of burned trunks and barren land. It remains a place where you can soak in the majesty of the natural setting, where you can sit and rest in awe. This view, at least, is the same as it was before the fire. Here, hikers disperse along the wide bluff, rocky and covered in scrubby brush, where a jaunt to any edge offers an incredible view of the Columbia River rolling serenely underfoot through the gorge. Some light clambering is required to reach the very top, but it's worth the extra effort. The hike up to Angel's Rest feels something like a pilgrimage to the ruins of a temple, the land still sacred but indelibly scarred. The terrain toward the top is rock and mud, and can be hard on your feet as you walk. Small deciduous trees, now bare after fall, fill gaps alongside patches of woody brush.Īs you follow the switchbacks to the top, look down and you can spy fellow hikers as they climb, exposed through branches that barely offer cover. It's as if they were placed there by hand – or rather, as if the flames should have set them at odd angles, not left their remains so rooted in place. Here, at the edge of the cliff overlooking the gorge, blackened snags stick up unnervingly straight. Philotheos Skoufos was a witness for Poulakis in a legal matter around 1666. According to the contract, Tzorzi had to follow Poulakis anywhere he went including Venice. He signed a six-year contract to teach painting to Marinos Damistras son Tzorzi. Poulakis was a member of the Greek Brotherhood of Venice in 1654. Famous Greek painters Philotheos Skoufos, Emmanuel Tzanes, Konstantinos Tzanes, and Ioannis Moskos were all living in Venice around that time. His son was baptized in Venice in 1646 and his daughter two years later. He stayed there for thirteen years until 1657. By the age of twenty-four, he was living in Venice. He was married and had two children Vittirous and Eleni. Over 130 of his paintings have survived and can be found all over the world. Poulakis works exhibit qualities of the Venetian school. Poulakis's works are likened to Andreas Pavias and Georgios Klontzas. Stephanos Tzangarolas was another famous painter in Corfu around the same period. Candia finally fell after twenty years of siege in 1669. Emmanuel Tzanes and Poulakis were active painters of the Cretan School until Candia, went to war with the Ottomans around 1649. His works establish their own symbolic universe, mixing personal memory, loss, and desire, pointing to the negotiation and transgression of limits between art and the everyday that were central to his work and philosophy. Portraying solitary young men in interiors-daydreaming, gazing pensively, reclining, relaxing, and enjoying their own company-Tsarouchis formulated a unique artistic language. The foundation of Tsarouchis’s artistic sensibility involved negotiating the difference between the promise of modernization and the spell of tradition, as well as the gradual elaboration of this difference in his personal politics, which aimed at subverting the gender binary. The show brings together over two hundred paintings, drawings, watercolors, stage designs, and photographs, including portraits of anonymous youths, homoerotically charged mise-en-scènes, and major allegorical paintings referencing religious iconography augmented with contemporary costumes and props. This catalogue is published on the occasion of the first major survey of his work outside of his home country, which is also the first exhibition in the United States devoted to his work. More than three decades after his death in 1989, the artist’s rich oeuvre remains relatively unknown outside of Greece, where he is recognized as one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. I thought it was promising, so I tried it.ī2 was slow. The price is great: $60/TB/year storage, the egress fees are <10x cheaper than Google/Amazon/Microsoft, and it's backed by a big backup company. Backblaze B2Ī lot of people on backup forums recommend Backblaze B2. The 180-day "Archive" storage is cheaper than Google, but might take hours to restore, and I don't want to figure that out. Their 30-day retention plan "Cold" costs $132/TB/year storage. They have lots of different pricing depending how much level of replication you want. They have a Sydney region, and 30-day ("Cool") and 180-day retention options ("Archive"). It was pretty hard to find the egress pricing and I'm not totally sure I'm reading the right price? Microsoft Azure Blob StorageĪzure is the #2 cloud. Would each API request take an hour to return? What if I need to restore many files, do I need to rewrite my backup client to work in parallel? Or do I copy to other storage first? There's probably good answers to these questions but I don't have them.ĪWS' egress fees are famously expensive and opaque, though it looks like it's cheaper than Google in Australia. And I didn't really feel like wrestling with the tradeoffs of "Glacier Flexible Retrieval" ($43/TB/year storage). But their instant-access 90-day retention offering, "Glacier Instant Retrieval" was much more expensive ($166/TB/year storage) than Google's. Amazon has 5(!) classes of blob storage, from "Standard" to "Glacier Deep Archive".Īmazon has a Sydney region, which is probably fast to upload to. The market leader and inventor of this segment. There's a high-speed Sydney region, the security posture is great, I'm very familiar with the platform, the tool ecosystem is large, but the egress pricing, particularly in Australia, is extremely expensive. It's a good fit for backups, with decent storage pricing ($72/TB/year) and still instant retrieval when needed. I was already using Google Cloud Storage Coldline for Arq backups from my laptop. Regional Data Transfer Out to Internet (Australia)ĭisclosure: I'm employed by Google, and use Google Cloud Storage at work. Here's the spreadsheet I made to evaluate ( original in Google Sheets): Name This was frankly a bit disappointing, as I was hoping to find something better than what I was already using! Options Also this great comparison on the Duplicacy Forum. You should probably read Anthony Agius' Cloud Archive Storage Comparison in addition to mine, because he goes deeper into niche players that I couldn't be bothered evaluating, and considers restore fees. I didn't bother considering restore fees. Your mileage may vary: This is a pretty rough, not very rigorous, somewhat "vibes-based" comparison. Egress fees are generally high, so you really don't want to use a backup software that has to read back data as part of normal operation. So my expected value of egress fees is maybe one tenth what's quoted. Or maybe I can poke around the data on a VM in their cloud, and only egress the really interesting stuff. If my local data fails, I'll probably be happy to pay a bit to restore. I don't really want minimum retention period of a year because then I'll feel very locked-in.Įgress fees: I don't care so much about network egress fees because I think the risk of me losing this data locally is pretty low, about <10% each year. But I probably want to start thinning backups out after 90 days, and delete altogether after a year. I'm happy to keep the backups for at least 90 days. I want backups to be quick, so they should probably have an Australian region. What I care about: I have about 1TB to back up. Some providers have 'minimum retentions' where you have to pay for at least 1, 3, 6, or 12 months of storage. There's usually storage fees (per GB per month), sometimes 'restore fees' if it's in deep storage, and sometimes network egress fees when you want to get your data back out onto the public internet. The pricing is fairly tricky to work out. I chose which cloud backup software I'd use (winner: Duplicacy), but where should I upload my backups to? There are lots of blob storage providers. After I lost a hard drive to (possibly) a lightning storm, I re-evaluated my backup strategy. All of the games we support include a dedicated server browser. Because of this, the increase in price for kosher meat had a relatively widespread impact. In 1902, although many American Jews began to assimilate and drop many of their religious practices, many still kept kosher. In 1902 the kosher meat was recorded to be 5-6 cents more expensive per pound than non-kosher meat, even before the price increased. This lengthy process and the many steps involved are what make kosher meat more expensive than non-kosher meat. The meat is then salted in order to remove any remaining blood. Finally many parts of the animal have to be removed such as certain fats and all the blood. After the shechita, the animal must be checked for any life-threatening wounds which could render the animal not kosher even after being properly slaughtered. Additionally, a certified butcher known as a shochet must slaughter the animal in accordance with Jewish law in a process known as shechita. The main criteria for a mammal to be kosher is that the animal must have split hooves and chew its cud. The laws of kashrut can be found throughout the Torah, Mishnah, Talmud and various halachic works. Adhering to the strict dietary laws of kashrut is a significant part of Orthodox Jewish life. In general, kosher meat tends to be pricier than non-kosher meat due to the various restrictions and requirements that come with it. This trend in turn, lent much more strength to women's suffrage movements and provided a model for women to exert their influence in other areas, such as in the kosher meat boycott. In addition to the rise of women's suffrage movements, the end of the 19th century saw the number of middle class American women volunteering in clubs, professional societies, and local charities increase significantly. These protests took place at a time when women were beginning to exert political influence. Thus the women of the Lower East Side Jewish community were forced to take matters into their own hands, staging a large boycott and convincing many people not to buy meat. Initially, the Jewish butchers in New York City attempted to boycott the meat trust by refusing to sell meat, but the trust was too powerful and their boycott crumbled. This continued until the election of President Theodore Roosevelt, who led a war on trusts and monopolies, gaining the title the “trust buster.” Īt the turn of the 20th century, the meat industry was still under the control of robber barons who in 1902 decided to hike up prices. Though Congress passed a number of antitrust laws in the 1890s, such as the Sherman Antitrust Act, these laws were not usually enforced and the government often sided with the powerful robber barons. These monopolies and trusts were able to dramatically increase prices in their respective industries, and prevented consumers from finding goods at a cheaper price. The Gilded Age (1870–1900) in the United States saw powerful robber barons monopolizing a wide array of industries including the railroad, oil, steel and meat industries. The kosher meat boycott of 1902 developed as the Gilded Age was coming to a close. The protests, led mainly by immigrant Jewish women on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, though controversial in their often-violent tactics, were largely successful and resulted in the lowering of the price of meat down to 14 cents a pound. This increase was significant enough that many Jewish families could no longer afford to buy meat. The 1902 kosher meat boycott was a boycott of New York City kosher butchers on the part of American Jewish women in response to a coordinated increase in price of kosher meat from 12 to 18 cents a pound.
